PolyU Eco-Design and Manufacturing Programme for Electronic Products Kickoff Ceremony and Seminar on 2006.04.29.Saturday

The Eco-Design and Manufacturing Programme for Electronics Products Kickoff Ceremony and Seminar was held on April 29, 2006 morning at Chiang Chen Studio Theater, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon.

The ceremony was jointly presented by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and School of Design. This Ecodesign project is supported by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the Government of HKSAR and eight industrial sponsors as follows:

The ceremony started at 10:00 am with Prof. JM Ko's, Vice President (Research Development) of PolyU, welcoming remarks.

Officiating Guest Mr. Gordon Leung, Deputy Commissioner of Innovation and Technology Commission of HKSAR Government delivered a speech emphasizing the HKSAR government's interest in eco-design. Prof. KB Chan, Chairman of Hong Kong Green Manufacturing Alliance and Chairman of the Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of eco-design to the Hong Kong economy..
Dr. SW Lui, Vice President (Partnership Development) of PolyU, presented souvenirs to officiating guests and sponsors.
After the coffee break, Prof. Winco Yung, the PolyU Project Principal Investigator of this Ecodesign project, presented an introduction on Ecodesign and the ITF project. Next, Prof. WB Lee, Chair Professor & Head of Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, and Prof. Lorraine Justice, Swire Chair Professor and Head of School of Design, presented souvenirs to two speakers.
Session one of the technical seminar, entitled "From Eco-design to Eco-innovation: Sustainability, Information Technology and the Future of Design", was presented by Prof. Chris Ryan, Co-Director, Australian Centre for Science Innovation and Society, University of Melbourne.

Session two of the technical seminar, entitled ˇ§Eco-design: Challenges and Rewardsˇ¨, was presented by Mr. Douglas Tomkin, Associate Professor and Head of School of Design Faculty of Design Architecture and Building, University of Technology Sydney.
Prof. Yanta Lam, from School of Design, moderated the Q&A session and the two speakers answered all of the questions that arose from the audience.
After the Q & A session, the ceremony and seminars ended by 12:15 pm.
